Ethiopia: 13 arrested over subversive behaviour

Police in the Ethiopian town of Arbaminch have detained 13 individuals suspected of engaging in subversive activities to undermine peace in the area, a local official confirmed on Sunday. The suspects were secretly planning to disturb the peace in the locality, Hailemichael Gulanta, head of the town council said, adding that those arrested on 30 and 31 October were found with arms.
He said one of them was enlisting, training and equipping new recruits with artillery and housing the other suspects at his residence.
The unnamed individual is suspected of having links with the outlawed Ginbot-7, an opposition group fighting an insurgency against the Ethiopian government from neighbouring Eritrea.
Gulanta said members of the public had played a decisive role in unmasking the group which is the subject of an investigation.
The local official who did not say when the suspects will be prosecuted told Ethiopians to be vigilant.
