Antioch teen: Don't buy me birthday gifts, donate to Ethiopian children

ANTIOCH -- Last year, an Antioch teen made headlines when she asked for donations to help impoverished Ethiopian children instead of birthday gifts, and raised thousands of dollars for the cause.
This year, Nubia Wilson, 16, has decided to do it again. On Thursday, the teen sent out a mass email announcing that she was attempting to raise $5,000 this year for the Ethiopia-based Fregenet Foundation, which provides education to kids in poverty.

"I believe that birthdays shouldn't be about parties, but rather celebrating with and for the ones you care about," said Wilson, whose heritage is based in Ethiopia.

Last year, Wilson raised $5,000 through donations, and also because her family sold some of their Ethiopian heirlooms and donated the proceeds. Those funds went towards expanding a fifth-grade classroom to allow students to continue learning beyond the fourth grade, as well as updating the facilities at Fregenet.

Wilson has pledged that 100 percent of the donations she received will go toward the Fregenet Foundation. Anyone who wants to donate can do so by visitinghttps://www.paypal.me/NubiaW
