UN HRC Should Reject Election of Burundi, Ethiopia and Togo - Freedom house

In response to Burundi, Ethiopia and Togo seeking to join the UN Human Rights Council or extend their membership, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“Freedom House strongly opposes the election of countries to the UN Human Rights Council that do not respect and uphold the Council's basic principles, including freedom of speech, press, and assembly as well as the rule of law,” said Vukasin Petrovic, director of Africa programs. “Africa’s representatives should reflect the Council's goal of protecting and promoting human rights. Having governments known for blatant disregard of their citizens' fundamental rights casts a shadow on the credibility of the Council as a global human rights body.”
Burundi and Ethiopia are both rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2015Togo is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2015
