Dubai: The medical team from Al Nabdat (Arabic for heartbeat) initiative has performed four open heart surgeries on Ethiopian children successfully on the first day of the initiative.
Al Nabdat initiative, set up by Mohammad Bin Rashid Charity and Humanitarian Establishment in collaboration with the Dubai Health Authority, consists of 20 people, who comprise the medical staff, from across disciplines and specialities. Dr Obaid Mohammad Al Jasim, Consultant for Cardiothoracic Surgery from the DHA, performed the first four surgeries and was accompanied by two administrative assistants.
Dr Al Jasim arrived in Addis Ababa last Friday night on a humanitarian mission with the goal of performing complicated heart surgeries. On the first day, he operated on four children, aged three to 14
“Such surgeries must be treated at an early age either using catheters or invasive surgery since it could delay children’s physical growth or mental growth which results from a deficiency of oxygen in the blood and high blood pressure in the lungs,” said Dr Al Jasim.
Ebrahim Bu Melha, Deputy Chairman of Board of Trustees of the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charity and Humanitarian Establishment, said that this is the third mission carried out by Al Nabdat initiative outside the UAE.
Bu Melha clarified that the establishment covers all finances for as many surgeries as possible, performed on Ethiopian children, throughout their stay in the country. The team has extended their stay in Ethiopia until May 22.
He also explained that the initiative in Ethiopia aims at treating 60 sick Ethiopian children suffering from congenital defects, especially those unable to cover medical expenses and the Al Nabdat initiative will campaign in several other countries.
