Ethiopian church charity appeals to charity tribunal

Ethiopian church charity appeals to charity tribunal

A London-based Ethiopian orthodox church charity has appealed to the charity tribunal against the Charity Commission’s decision to open a statutory inquiry into its governance.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church St Mary of Debre Tsion, based in Battersea, south-west London, registered its appeal with the First-tier Tribunal (Charity) last month.

The tribunal is waiting for the commission’s response. The regulator has until 14 May to respond.

A spokeswoman for the commission said: "We currently have a statutory inquiry open into the charity concerning governance issues."

The church’s accounts have been filed late with the commission every year for the past five years, by between three and 11 months.

In the year to 31 December 2012, the charity had an income of £150,058 and spending of £162,098. In 2010, its income had been nearly twice as high, its accounts show. The church collection accounted for £125,560 of its income.

The church did not respond to Third Sector’s request for comment.
